Today was the longest I've run in months, since before Boston. I felt pretty good, relaxed, for the first 7 miles. Then, as I've experienced so many times in the past, my body knows, remembers, the exact distance of my most recent long run — 8.5-9 miles. That when the "just walk" radio station started to play in my mind. I could see the dark clouds coming at me out of the west as I headed uptown on the streetcar tracks from Lee Circle. I started a silent, internal chant for rain as I started to slow down, trying to resist the song in my head, "walk, dude, just walk..." Then right around Jackson Ave. I spotted a runner ahead of me, maybe 350 meters out, also heading uptown. So I shifted the internal chatter to "just try to reel her in." I assumed it was a woman. But had no way to really tell. Whoever it was they were statuesque, and not coming back to me very quickly. They could run, for sure. I managed a little bit of an increase in tempo and suffered for it. I hit Washington and I'd only made up about a block. Then Louisiana and another block closer to the figure in front of me. I was falling apart and not closing very fast. I wasn't going to catch her. (By now I could see for certain that it was a woman, a tall thin woman with a very smooth stride.) I pushed harder anyway trying to maintain form and my legs were turning to rubber then stone then rubber again. I was cooked. I did catch her, one block before my turn at Upperline just as the rain started. I was toast. I slowed as I turned for the half mile jog to my front porch. The rains came and it felt like I'd gone to heaven jogging easily in the rain. Waiting for me on the porch was a dry towel and a tall bottle of "red sauce," Endurox R4, that Kirsten had so lovingly left out for me — tasted like heaven. My first long run was a success. Life is good.

I got a later start today than I'd hoped for. Yesterday was one of my close co-worker's last day and we had an afternoon party/send off at an interesting bar downtown called Barcadia. It's an cool concept, a combination bar with 50 or so beers on tap and lots af arcade type games, like air hockey, skeeball... that kind of stuff. So I had more than a few beers starting at around 4:00 PM and was sound asleep by 8:30. My head wasn't so great when I woke. And my legs are sore as hell from lifting this past Thursday.
Today I tried run a not-so-easy extended form drill. Despite my sore legs I tried to run just fast enough for it to tire me out early on, trying to maintain a steady pace while concentrating on keeping good form and not get sloppy. I also took along my iPod for entertainment and distraction. All in all I had a good run, pleasant (except for the soreness) and relatively successful as a form drill. Tomorrow comes my longest run in many months. My intention is to get up early, and NOT hungover, and run 12+. We shall see.

Weeks from 4/24 - 6/7: Broad Overview
I've not posted in awhile. I'm not sure why. The easy explanation is that I just didn't feel like it. The more accurate explanation is a string of excuses: I was too busy; tired; not sleeping well... But we all know that those are really excuses.
I have been running though, and lifting. My legs are sore as hell from a long legs session following a set of 3's and 3's this past Thursday. I've run quite a few of my workouts without a watch. "Workout" is probably not the right word for those runs. Mostly they were deliberate attempts to get back to the real reason I run: I run because I like to run. More on that subject on my Smoked Fish blog.
So, here's the general Garmin link to those runs over the past month that I've worn the GPS gadget: http://connect.garmin.com/activities?cid=39805984
The gaps in the record don't necessarily represent days off. Most are runs without a watch. I've averaged 5-6 days a week for that time. And I'm just starting to feel like I'm actually running again, training, lifting, preparing myself for another Boston qualifier in Lehigh, PA. Then, if my aging body holds together, a full-scale marathon attempt at Boston '14. I have to go back.

My legs were really dead today. I had no snap whatsoever. Almost two miles into this run I felt really crappy running at 8:30-40 and decided to try going a little faster to see if it felt any worse. So the middle, roughly two miles, portion of my practice session today was at approximately 7:30. It still felt like ass. But no worse than 9:00. The one good thing to report is that my buttock is loosening up. I'm still pretty tight deep in my hamstring. But my ass cheek didn't bother me today.

I took it very easy this morning. I'm planning on running out to City Park this evening for a "Run For Boston" event. If I do run out there and do the event that will tack on another ~8.5 miles to my "easy" day. I'm not real sure I could have run any harder this morning anyway. My buttock is still a little tight. And I felt really tired. I think my body is still getting over the stress of the past week.
Speaking of last week: All last week, in the psychological aftermath of our Boston experience, I smelled bad, really bad. I don't normally get a severely funky smell. I do sweat with the best of them. And the only deodorant I use is one of those stones that's fragrance free. (That's actually why I use the stone.) I'm, hopefully, past the stinky stage and back to myself... in so many ways.

This run was hard for me. I jogged out to the NOLA Run For Boston at City Park. I knew I was tired and not quite normal yet. I knew it would taste like shit. I even contemplated riding my bike out there. But no, I felt like I had to run. I just had to run, even if it was unpleasant. And it was just that — unpleasant, physically and emotionally. But not horrible. I knew I had a goal. I knew the reason. And I knew I had to run. I knew I had to think.

A beautiful Sunday morning and a nice easy head clearing run. My right buttock is still tight. I ran with music and my thoughts. Today is my first run on this year's training schedule. I've decided to post links to my Garmin uploads on this site so my running is out there for all to see. I've decided to post thoughts, some of them about running and while running, some not, on my Smoked Fish blog.
Peace!
